I'm just going to go on the record and say I'm a 75 subscriber channel and I don't have a massive gaming PC or gaming mouse and keyboard or fancy mic and if you do great! But I use my $300 laptop I got for school, a cheap wired mouse from walmart and headset with mic I bought from a friend for $15 (Now my girlfriend bought me a better headset so I use that.)

This is more for people who want to start let's playing but haven't yet because of not having the "right" gear.

I see people post all the time asking about gear to start (Not on this specific forum) but I think this is something that should be said regarding gear. There is a lot of first time lets players always starting and they always ask about different gear, what mic should I get? what mouse brand is best? My answer is always "What can you afford?" as crazy as this sounds you a 0 to 100 subscriber channel don't need a $200+ mic or $2000 PC to record when you're first starting, you just don't. Your first few months and possibly even years into youtube you don't need any of the massive gear when you start out, it might be all shiny and fancy but do you need to drop all this money on the youtube hobby out the gate? Probably not. You can use a simple mic to start with, if you decide you want to go farther in youtube and get better mics and stuff go ahead! But you don't need it to start out. No matter what you do unless you've already been doing videos for awhile your first however many videos aren't going to be great out the gate, no matter what gear you have it just isn't without learning how and experience.

I hope this helps someone because it's something I had issues at the start of my time youtube career. If you have anything to add throw it down below so we can chat!

TLDR: When you first start just make videos and make them to the best of your ability! Don't worry about gear. In the beginning It's all about learning.

voice quality is everything in my opinion. Yeah you can record on a laptop and use whatever mouse and keyboard you want but honestly, shelling out 50 bucks on a blue snowball is by far the best decision you'll ever make if you want to get into youtube. If you mess with your audio for your mic, say in sony vegas, if you mess with your EQs and all that stuff, you can make the blue snowball sounds 10 times better in my opinion. I spent 1.5k on my pc but that was before i started youtube. But yeah, anyone starting out on youtube you really dont need a beastly pc or top of the line gear or a really expensive mic that requires audio interfaces and such. all i can recommend for new youtubers is focus on a mic to be honest.

It depends if you do commentary on your videos or not. If you do, then a good quality mic should be the first thing you want to get so people can hear you better. If not, then focus on upgrading your PC. If you plan to do face cam in the future, you can purchase a new one after the mic.

I'm not going to argue that audio quality is one of the most important things in youtubing, not at all against that even. It's just that most small channels get so caught up in trying to get the "right" gear for them to start that they never do start, when it's not really going to matter for however long as you just need to focus on making content and learning if you even like doing youtube at first, as many channels die within the first 3 months. I think too many people get caught up in what they need to start they never do start that is the point I wanted to get across. That you don't need all the great gear to start, just do it and if you want to improve your content or get more into youtube then you should upgrade but if you don't like it or want to continue then you're not out much.

I completely agree with you 100 percent. A buddy of mine was influenced by me and decided to start doing youtube videos and kept asking what gear i had because he would want it and he bought the same exact webcam i have and the same exact mic and spent 100s and 100s of dollars for a gaming pc. Just recently he told me he isnt cut out for it. He still plays games but he pretty much shelled out 150 or so for the mic and webcam and probably wont use it much. I see so many small channels come and go because A they either gave up or lost interest in it. B they are too busy with their own personal life and dont have the time to play games and make videos and lastly they probably quit because it didnt turn out how they thought it would and wasnt getting many views and subscribers. It took me forever to realize this but i never gave up on it.

Exactly. Youtube turned out to be harder for me then I expected but I welcomed the challenge and persevered lol. I'm by no means where I want to be youtube wise but I'm chugging along. It does get discouraging when I don't get the views or subs I want for a video or week but then the couple big fans I have make it all worth it. :)

I think the hardest thing for me has been trial and error with sound and software.
I have gone through a couple of headset mics. The best mic I have no is the Snowball.
Software...I was using OBS and then OBS Studio BUT with my laptop it was making my videos lag.
Because of a helpful MGN friend, I now use Action (an early Birthday gift), and it works perfectly.
I'm still learning but if you really want to do this you have to keep trying new things.

I agree when starting out you really don't need too much. If commentary is your thing then yes buy a decent mic and game capture device if recording from console. If you play on PC use Geforce Shadowplay, Overwolf or OBS Multiplatform to capture your gameplay and audio. Then you can upload the raw footage and use YouTube's video editor to edit the video.

Truth is if I had to do it all over again I would have started a vlog channel first and then moved to gaming. This way I could have use my phones camera to make vlogs and see if I liked make YouTube videos.

Millris action is what i'd recommend it is cheap and you can record full screen just games and pic the screen you want to record on you can also stream with it on twitch it is is a lot simpler then obs or most stream recording software so be sure to give it a look at!

For audio, I recommend a Neewer NW-700 Condenser Microphone because it is good quality and cheap.
