If, like many YouTubers, you are constantly frustrated by upload speeds to your channel, there is a simple and free way to reduce both upload and processing times which I have found to be very effective.

Handbrake is a free video file converter which will take your large video files and compress them (lossless conversion) pretty efficiently in preparation for uploading to YouTube and other video sharing sites.

Typically Files of around 3-4 gigs can often be reduced to less than 1 gig so you can imagine how much that will reduce the upload times (particularly if you have a poor connection speed as many do). This is all done with almost no noticeable reduction in the quality of your files.

The only real trade off of course is that it can take a while to process your file, especially if your PC is a bit of a dog or you are trying to get it to do too many other things at once. Overall though, the processing and upload time combined should be a lot less than the upload time alone for an original huge MP4 file. Pretty simple to use and plenty of online guidance available.

Anyway, if you want to give it a try here is the link to the download:-

    I second the OP!

Handbrake is my bread and butter for YouTube file size. :)

YT compresses the file as well right? So wouldn't compressing a compressed file lower the quality.

Not in the case. YouTube does compress the video, but only after the video file has completely upload to their servers. So you will still have to wait for the large file size to upload for the video to be compressed.

When you use Handbrake you want to make the file size smaller so it uploads faster, but retain the same quality of the video you rendered in your video editing program.

In the vein of self promotion checkout this video I recorded with Overwolf on my PC and then used Handbrake to make the files size smaller.

    UPDATE
(2/5/2016 - Sorry I have delete this video. I will be making a new one next week)

May have to look into Handbrake. I record on my old laptop (720p/30fps). My new desktop I'm capable of recording (1080p/60fps) but don't want to because of the file size. Will handbrake do WMV? I use movie maker on my laptop.

Yep. You can even convert the WMV file to MP4 when you used handbrake to lower the file size. Just look for handbrake tutorial on YouTube.

Whats your opinion on this? my laptop is old but capable of playing in 1080 but can't record in 1080 at the same time. Would it be worth it to record in 720 and then save it in 1080 thru movie maker. Would it even make a difference?

I would just keep your videos at 720p. The amount of time and energy you are putting into upscaling the video quality to 1080p is not worth it imo. BTW how many hard drive do you have and are you recording PC game footage or from a console?

I'm recording PC to an external 2TB. It's connected to the 3.0 USB. I just made a video in handbrake and it dropped the bitrate from 18000kbps to 1843kbps. I always rendered my vids in high bitrate so they aren't all pixelated or fuzzy on YT. Is this ok? how do I increase the bitrate

Try uploading the video and see how the quality is.

I'm not at my PC right now so I can't really answer if a lower kbps is okay as I've never really used it as my basis for making videos for YouTube.

I'll be back online in a few.

    1.Get better internet?
2.Downscale the quality from 1080p to 720p? (really what's the difference on youtube?
    3.Shorten the video?
4.Upload overnight? Then the time really doesn't matter unless it takes more than the time you sleep (which it's way to long anyways then?)
Compressing might work but really if you're going to complain about upload speeds just use the above.

If you really want to upload faster, look at your internet connection! Also check out your recording bitrate. The higher it is, the more space you'll use. You might want to consider the fact that if you decrease the bitrate, the quality of your videos will decrease. When I upload a High Quality video @ 60 fps / 1080p, it usually takes an hour or so because my upstream is at 4 mbps. It's worth it though!

You might also want to use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. If you're on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, you're probably going to get throttled if there's a lot of networks in the area. Try playing around with the channels in your Wi-Fi router settings. Use an app called Wifi Analyzer to see if there's any open channels so you won't cause interference with other networks. Here's a great guide for the app:

Hmm. I'll check it out. How much does it reduce the quality if anything? Is it noticeable on YouTube?

upload videos to 720p its pretty good quality imo and really just get decent internet, our upload speeds atm are under 1mbps so we use our 4g on phone and it uploads easily and quickly no problem
