The title says it all really!
I don't expecting to be gaining a sub like everyday, but just general steady growth would be amazing!
So does anyone have any tips and tricks they could share with myself? It would be much appreciated!

While there isn't a absolute certain way to gain subs, there are ways to make it so your channel is more noticeable.

First off, i'd have to say thumbnails are very important. Nobody wants to view a video that has a thumbnail that looks like it was made in Microsoft Paint. If you have visually pleasing thumbnails, people will take the time to click your video.

Next, don't make 40 minute videos constantly. Nobody has the time to watch a 40 minute video, and if they do, they would probably watch a movie. I cannot stress this tip enough. I see small channels just posting hour long videos with only 3-4 views and wondering to themselves why nobody is watching them. I'm not saying never to post a long video, but to post them in moderation. I have noticed a 5 minute video gets 10 times as many views as a 30 minute video gets on my channel.

Another tip is to have a channel trailer. You want to have a short video that people can watch to see why they should subscribe to you. You should start talking about what your channel has to offer within the first 10 seconds. The channel trailer shouldn't be any longer than 1-2 minutes because it is exactly that, a trailer, not a documentary.

Lastly, would be video consistency. Now I'm not saying 3 videos a day, that would be very time consuming. What I mean is a new video 1-3 times a week if you can manage. I found out the best time to upload is around 3-6PM because that is around the time everyone is getting off school and work. I have personally done this and my sub count has skyrocketed, so IMO this is the best way to gain subscribers.

Now i'm not saying you need to follow these rules exactly, or that these tips are a sure fire way to get 1000's of subscribers, these are just some tips which you can use to make your channel more noticeable by people.

I will echo the above a bit, plus my own opinions.
    • Time of day is important. If it is too early, you will get buried; too late and peeps won't see and you'll be buried by the next day's worth of updates.
    • Consistency is important too. When you're small, people don't expect as much and are viewing out of curiousity mostly but you need to keep building or people move on.
    • CALL TO ACTION - Ask people, tell people to subscribe. Early in the video and again at the end. Be friendly about it. People forget and many don't even know about it so tell them why to subscribe.
    • Do keep videos short less than 20 minutes at first. Ideally around 10 minutes. For gaming anyway. Mine are very long now but they're streams. If you have 30 minutes of great footage then cut it into 2 or 3 vids. Then schedule them to be uploaded some days apart.
    • I think it's OK to have simple thumbs. Make 'em catchy. Try to have at least SOME consistency with branding in mind. I have seen thumbs which I know took a lot of effort but sometimes they look too...mmm... corporate. Not fun.
    • ENGAGE audience. Send a welcome to EVERY new subscriber. Answer EVERY comment. Put a like on all your own videos while you're at it.
    • If you're not in the mood for videos or your stuff is broke then do something else to improve your channel like practice editing, work on efficiency, research, watch tutorials, watch other channels to see how they are compared to yours and what you can add or avoid. Try learning and using a new effect in each cideo. It's OK to be cheesy. Cheesy is great. Gaming videos are cheesy just in the fact that they exist and people watch them. People like cheesy. Make sure you get a laugh when you watch your video. Doesn't matter if you laugh with or at yourself.
    • It doesn't have to be funny though. It can be informative. You can be a rage specialist.
    • YOU!!! People can watch the game you feature anywhere. People will watch your channel because of YOU, not your game.
    • Don't give up. This shit is HARD. It takes time and effort and your brain should hurt. A lot at first. If you thought this would be a get-rich-quick-or-easy gig then dude, you're wrong. But it could be the best investment of time and money you ever make. Imagine writing off your games and controllers at tax time. The ultimate stick to The Man. Think of the investment as tuition.
    • Don't give up when it goes slow or you lose subs.
    • USE Twitter. Make SURE you add it to your YouTube account's links. Setup IFTTT or something to automate your Twitter. When you Like someone's video, they will get Tweeted and you will be noticed. Find Discords and other chats used by creators and engage. Give others feedback and ask back. NETWORKING. Creators aren't the best audience because they're busy but they are who will give you confidence, knowledge, and some numbers. This will help your SEO.
    • TAGS
    • Descriptions, titles, include all your social links in descriptions.
    • EVERYWHERE you go FILL out your ENTIRE profile. Leave nothing blank. When it's all filled in, look for more blanks to fill in.
    • Don't give up. I know, I already said it.
    • Oh yeah, and DON'T give up.
    • Don't worry about making mistakes. You can always delete stuff later. Produce. First slap it together then refine. Don't get sucked into too much detail right away. Check out, from oldest to newest, any big YouTuber. Their first videos were no better than any of us noobs.

Hope that helps. Feel free to ask me, a total NOT guru, for more advice or detail. I am not a YouTube expert but I am a pro-am business man and psychologist.

Peace, good luck, have fun, and GAME ON!

Well Great to see that many partners have gave out great tips up there ^

Well from my side, let me inform you what a thumbnail is and what it should be like. A Thumbnail is an element which describes more than 50% of the video and should be designed neatly. People often look at thumbnails before clicking on a video. Make sure to put a professional look onto it.
Another Important factor is the Video Title. Try putting in some keywords in the youtube search bar and look at the options and try using them in your title. This chuck your video on top of the search results, therefore, your video will be more likely viewed.
(OPTIONAL)Do giveaways like once in 2 months. Doing it monthly or weekly will get you inactive subscribers unless your a giveaway channel and who's purpose is for giving away game codes and other stuff.
Upload quality should be HD, make sure that your voice is clear and understandable.

Now, for the main part, make the content that is most demanded. For eg: Closed beta gameplays and reviews.
