Blizzard announced today that they will be dropping the name Battle.net from their multiplayer platform.

The end of an era. Blizzard started using the Battle.net infrastructure back when they released the first Diablo game and have used it in every multiplayer game created since.
Today they have announced that over the next few months they will be steering away from Battle.net, using the same technology but ditching the old name.
According to Blizzard the name Battle.net was occasionally drawing confusion when people opened support tickets since it had it's own area seperate from "Blizzard", so now they gaming giant is just going to start naming things after itself like it's already started to do. Blizzard Streaming, Blizzard Voice, ect.

“When we created Battle.net, the idea of including a tailored online-gaming service together with your game was more of a novel concept, so we put a lot of focus on explaining what the service was and how it worked, including giving it a distinct name. Over time, though, we’ve seen that there’s been occasional confusion and inefficiencies related to having two separate identities under which everything falls—Blizzard and Battle.net. Given that built-in multiplayer support is a well-understood concept and more of a normal expectation these days, there isn’t as much of a need to maintain a separate identity for what is essentially our networking technology.”

What do you guys think? Is this the right move? I don't much care for it myself having been attached to Blizzard AND Battle.net for... well just about all my life. They've been using the domain style name for about 20 years now, and the sudden change kind of boggles my mind. Leave your opinions below, I'd like to see how everyone else feels about this matter.

Change is not always a good thing. In this case, though, they aren't changing any of the framework or technology they are just rebranding the service. Which is weird since Battle.net is already a household name in gaming households.

Since i am a console gamer myself i don't use it much but have an account to link my Diablo and Overwatch progress from the Playstation 4.

Regarding the change i can see why they do this in aspect to the confusion but since they have been using this since the beginning it kinda feels strange to see it be named different...

There shouldn't be much confusion considering it's been like this from the beginning. Makes you wonder about people sometimes lol

Agreed with you there though, it wouldn't surprise me if the real confusion comes after the change. If you change a formula that has been around since the start and name it something else is when people are going to get confused :p

I'm going to miss their old name, because I grew up with it personally. I can understand the confusion though, hah.

Nothing in the end isn't really going to change honestly, All games are still going to use the service nothing really isn't going to change and im sure blizzard will put redirects and more information out at a later date to help the newbies :)

In the end not a big deal, It's nothing like when GameSpy and the original EA Connect services went down and shutdown many games for multiplayer access.

Yeah nothing essentially is changing other than the name itself. But it's been in use for over 20 years. Changing it now just seems dumb to me. I grew up with battle.net being the thing. Now it's gonna be "Blizzard Launcher" or some crap. Screw that!

The origin of the golden age of Blizzard and the Battle.net name will forever remain in our memories. I still remember connecting through dial up to play Warcraft 3 and Starcraft, Memories of the connections screens will never fade.
